writing for the web
First thing's first: we cannot do any good writing without our researchers. They always manage to gather relevant information on a given topic by putting their intuition and creativity at work. Throughout a project, their work is closely connected to that of the writer, helping us to:
- Define the structure of the content packages.
- Write the content of the packages.
Research principles
To quote Oana, Laura's team mate, “anything's allowed and everything's worth trying” as far as research work is concerned.
Research is solving a two-variable equation at any moment:
- Too much information to synthesize;
- Assess the quality of information.
In order to solve it right, researchers follow some basic principles:
- Check information accuracy by consulting several sources;
- Check information validity — does the copy have a publishing date? does it link to an author? does it provide references?
- Keep an objective eye over the publisher's intentions — is the text a commercial, or any other kind of propaganda?
- Rather rely on wellknown, autorithative sources — The New York Times is better than MyBlog.com;
- Rely on your common sense — how is the text written? does it have misspelled words? does it look unprofessional in any other way?
The researcher is the first to understand the subject of a project. He is also the first to build a list of possible subtopics. That's why s/he needs a good understanding of the Internet and synthetic capabilities.
Writing principles
Since we came to Neomedia we have also learned a lot of things about web writing. First we came across the name of Jakob Nielsen. Next to substance, the usability of a web page became the keyword of our work.
Fancy design is nice but compelling text is what really matters. What we want to deliver is real substance. When writing for the web we guide ourselves by few but true principles:
- Offer objective, truthful information;
Truthful information means to us highly rated, up-to-date sources and renowned publishers. Our web researchers could explain this part better. They are the ones that dig it.
- Make the message sharp and clear;
We try to be as simple and direct as we can. We find more use in common words and well established phrases. Let's say we are more fond of black and white than greys.
- Write in a concise manner;
We do that by expressing more in less. May we say this is the hardest part?
- Offer scanable content.
We try to understand the logic of web reading. It is widely known that online readers skim and skip. We build our websites in such a way that users can find what they're looking for quickly and efficiently.
